Adding a text to speech voice to a TikTok video, step by step

TikTok has a built-in text-to-speech voice, and it is fine for a caption or two. It falls apart for a full script: you're stuck with a handful of voices, the text has to live on screen, and there is no way to reuse the same voice in CapCut or on YouTube Shorts. Generating the voiceover separately fixes all three.

Three ways to get the WAV into your video

CapCut (mobile or desktop): open your project, tap Audio → Sounds → Import, pick the WAV from your files, then drag it under the first clip. Split it with the blade where your visuals change. TikTok's own editor: after recording or uploading clips, tap Add sound → the folder icon on newer versions, or upload the WAV as a “sound” through the desktop uploader. Premiere or DaVinci: import the file like any other audio track. In every case, mute the original clip audio or duck it to about −18 dB under the voice.

Pacing for 9:16 attention spans

A TikTok voiceover runs faster than a YouTube one — around 160–180 words per minute instead of 130. You get there through the script, not a speed slider: short sentences, no subordinate clauses, a verb near the start of every line. Write the hook as a question or a number (“Three settings you're getting wrong”), and put the payoff in the last 3 seconds so the video loops cleanly. Captions and the voice have to agree

Most viewers watch with sound off for the first second. Turn on auto-captions in CapCut or TikTok after placing the voice track; they'll follow the generated audio word for word because the pronunciation is consistent. If a word is captioned wrong, fix the spelling in your script and regenerate — it's faster than editing caption frames.
