Engagement per post (EPP) measures the average total interactions a single piece of content receives — typically calculated by summing all engagement actions (likes, comments, shares, saves, clicks, reactions) and dividing by the total number of posts in a given time period. Median is often more informative than average because outlier posts (viral content) can dramatically skew average EPP upward, making "normal" performance look better than it actually is.

Instagram: Instagram EPP varies significantly by content format. A company page post with 500 engagements (reactions + comments + reshares) from relevant professional audiences is far more valuable than 5,000 likes on an Instagram lifestyle post. LinkedIn EPP benchmarking should be weighted by comment volume specifically, since comments drive the most distribution and commercial signal on the platform.

Twitter/X: Twitter/X EPP is measured across "engagements" (all interactions including detail expands, which have a very low action threshold) and "qualified engagements" (retweets + replies + quote tweets, which require deliberate action). The distinction matters because Twitter's "engagements" metric inflates EPP with passive actions, while qualified engagement EPP better reflects genuine audience response.

Misconception 2: Declining EPP means content quality is declining.
