Compress Video Online — Free, Nothing Uploaded

Some loss is unavoidable when you shrink a file, but you can keep it invisible. Start with the balanced 1080p preset: it keeps full HD and only lowers the bitrate to a level most viewers can't tell apart from the original. Only drop to 720p or 480p when the destination is a phone screen or a chat app that will recompress the video anyway.

Because the source was already encoded at a lower bitrate than the preset you picked. This tool caps the target bitrate at 90% of the source and greys out any preset that wouldn't shrink the file, with an “already smaller” note, so it normally won't inflate the file — but very low-bitrate sources can still end up slightly larger, because the encoder never goes below a 300 kbps floor. Pick the next preset down, which lowers both resolution and bitrate, and the saving reappears.

Encoding runs locally on a single CPU thread, so it is roughly real-time: a 2-minute clip takes about 2–4 minutes, and a 10-minute video can take a quarter of an hour on a laptop. Keep the tab open while it works; switching tabs is fine, closing the page cancels the job. The smallest preset is the fastest because it encodes fewer pixels.

Up to 500MB and up to 10 minutes per video. Above roughly 200MB you'll see a memory warning — the in-browser engine has to hold the file in RAM, so a desktop browser handles big files far better than a phone. For anything longer, trim it into parts first with the video trimmer next door.

Compressing a video doesn't change who owns it. If you own the footage or hold a licence for it, the compressed copy carries the same rights and you can publish, sell or advertise with it. If the source belongs to someone else, compressing it here gives you no new rights — only process content you own or have permission to use.
