How a text-based voice changer works, and what it can't do

Search “voice changer” and most results are real-time apps for games and calls that pitch-shift your microphone. This tool is different on purpose: it turns your speech into text, then generates that text in a completely different voice. You lose your original rhythm and gain a genuinely different speaker. Knowing which of the two you need saves you a download.

Speech to text happens in your browser

Transcription uses the Web Speech API built into Chrome and Edge, so your microphone audio never leaves your device at this step — only the text is sent to generate the new voice. Speak in the language of the voice you've selected; the recognizer is set to match it. Firefox and Safari don't expose this API reliably, so on those browsers paste the text instead. Check the transcript before generating: a wrong word in the text becomes a wrong word in the audio.

What changes, what doesn't

The output is a new speaker reading your words: different gender, accent or language if you choose. Your pauses, emphasis and laugh do not carry over — the engine reads the text with its own pacing. That makes it ideal for anonymizing a voice message, dubbing yourself into a different character for a skit, or producing a clean read of something you mumbled. It makes it wrong for live calls, singing, or anything where your own delivery is the point.

Keeping the result honest

You can sound like a different, openly licensed voice; you cannot sound like a specific real person.

Limits and formats

600 characters per generation, no daily cap — everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded. Output is a 24 kHz WAV. Recognition works best with a headset mic in a quiet room; long pauses end a recognition session, so speak in complete thoughts and press stop when done.

Why doesn't the microphone work?

Browser speech recognition is reliable in Chrome and Edge. In Safari or Firefox, type or paste the text instead — everything else works the same.

Can I sound like a celebrity?

No. The library holds only openly licensed, pseudonymous voices, and impersonating a real person is not allowed.

Does it keep my emphasis and laughs?
