How Instagram stores photos, and what that means for your download

Photos behave nothing like Reels on Instagram. What you get back is decided by Instagram's upload pipeline — its resize ladder, its aspect-ratio rules, its metadata stripping — long before any downloader touches the file. Knowing that pipeline tells you exactly what quality to expect, and when you are chasing a file that no longer exists.

The 1080px ceiling nobody tells you about

Instagram resizes on upload. Anything wider than 1080 pixels is scaled down to 1080 and re-encoded as JPEG; anything narrower is generally left alone. So a 4000×3000 photo from a DSLR is stored as 1080×810, and that resized copy is the only version Instagram serves. The download you get here is that stored file, byte for byte — we don't upscale it, sharpen it or re-encode it. Any site promising to "restore HD" from an Instagram link is either interpolating pixels that were discarded years ago or lying outright. If you need the true original, the only route is asking whoever posted it.

Carousels: 20 slides, and you probably want two of them

A carousel holds up to 20 items and can mix photos with video. After resolving, each item appears as its own numbered row with its type labelled, so a ten-slide brand post becomes ten independent downloads and you take slide 3 and slide 7. This is the difference that matters for competitive research and moodboarding: the alternative is screenshotting, which costs you both resolution and the correct aspect ratio. Mixed carousels are handled in one pass — the video slides show up as MP4 rows alongside the JPEG ones.

Dimensions, aspect ratios and stripped metadata

Instagram accepts three aspect ratios and stores photos accordingly: 1080×1080 for squares, 1080×1350 for 4:5 portraits, 1080×566 for 1.91:1 landscapes. Anything outside that range was cropped at upload time, and the cropped-away area is not recoverable. Instagram also strips EXIF on upload, so downloaded photos carry no camera model, no capture timestamp and no GPS coordinates — good for the person who posted them, worth knowing if you were counting on that metadata for provenance.

What will not resolve, and what you may do with what does

Private accounts require an authorised logged-in session, so their photos cannot be resolved — that is Instagram's access control, not a gap here. Deleted posts and expired Stories are gone from Instagram's servers entirely; no tool retrieves them. We never ask for your username or password, and any download site that does is after your account, not your photo. Everything you save still belongs to the person who shot it: fine for personal reference and offline viewing, but reposting commercially needs permission from the copyright holder. How do I download all the photos in an Instagram carousel?+

What resolution do the photos come out at?+

Whatever Instagram stores, which is capped at 1080 pixels on the long edge — typically 1080×1080, 1080×1350 or 1080×566. That is the highest-quality copy Instagram itself holds; we pass it through without re-compressing it.

Can I get the original full-resolution photo back?+

No, and neither can anyone else. Instagram discards the oversized original at upload time and keeps only the resized copy. Tools claiming to "restore HD" are upscaling pixels that no longer exist. For a true original, ask the person who posted it.

Can I download photos from a private account?+

No. Private posts need an authorised logged-in session, and we never ask for or use Instagram credentials. Deleted posts and expired Stories are also unavailable — they no longer exist on Instagram's servers.

Do the downloaded photos still have their EXIF data?+

No. Instagram strips EXIF during upload, so camera model, capture time and GPS location are already gone before the file reaches us. What you download is the stripped copy Instagram serves to everyone.
